3 Peaks Challenge for Charity
Monday 30th November 2009
When John Ready and four of his friends, all from the Chesterfield area, decided to do the Yorkshire 3 Peak Challenge for charity, they found it a tough and very muddy challenge.
John said: “We all made it, but it was much harder than we thought it would be. The weather was fantastic, although I didn’t look ahead too much at the wonderful views as all I could see was the next big hill to climb. In the end the total we raised made the blisters worthwhile.”
John wanted to raise money for Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust to benefit the High Dependency Unit, Intensive Care Unit and Ward K2 at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. It was his way of saying thanks to all the staff for the wonderful care his Mother, Pauline Ready, received.
John continued: “Mum spent five months in the Hallamshire Hospital from February this year after developing acute pancreatitis while on holiday in Cyprus. The staff showed my Dad and all the family a considerable amount of compassion when things were looking bad, as it was thought on several occasions that Mum was not likely to survive. Thankfully, with the help of the amazing staff, Mum pulled through and was able to come to my wedding in August and now cannot wait to hold her first grandchild in May next year. Nine months on she is slowly getting better, although still has a few more operations to endure.
“We really do owe Dr Wyman and all the staff a debt that can never be repaid, but we will have some fun along the way trying to do our bit with a few charity events.”
John and his cousin, Jason Ready, and friends Wayne Hooley, Richard Adams and Richard Germany, raised a total of £1,230. £350 of this was donated by Richard Germany’s employer Stahl Industries in Chesterfield.
Fundraiser Carol Denton said: “The Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge is just that, a real challenge, and not only did they rise to the occasion, but raised a lot of money in the process and had a good laugh along the way. That is what fundraising is about and we are so pleased that the friends will be back again next year for a new challenge. They are a great bunch of guys and we are very grateful for their fundraising efforts.”
