Cancer Patients Enjoy Pampering at Weston Park

Tuesday 30th June 2009

Cancer patients at Weston Park Hospital are enjoying free complementary therapy sessions in the comfort of their own bed, thanks to a grant of £45,000 which we awarded. The highly skilled therapists from the Cavendish Centre were commissioned to provide the service to patients at Weston Park after a successful six month trial last year.

Jean Moulson, 62 from Crookes, is one of the patients who has enjoyed being pampered with her favourite treatments – reiki and reflexology.

“It’s bliss, bliss, bliss,” said Ms Moulson, who has just completed her sixth and final session. “It’s so nice to close your eyes and relax. It can be very stressful and worrying when you’re ill and undergoing lots of medical treatments. Complementary therapy helps to relieve imbalances in your body and enhances your well-being by renewing energy flows. It’s made my time in hospital much more relaxing.”

The therapists, who have many years experience in dealing with cancer patients, visit patients at the hospital twice a week after an initial assessment. As well as tough therapy, they provide soothing music to help take the patient's mind away from the hospital environment.

Sister Margaret Shutt said: “Therapies like these can really help cancer patients, who may need some space and time away from a chaotic period of time. It helps the patients relax their minds and bodies, clear their heads, and find a sense of peace.

“I’m so glad we can bring this service to the patients on our wards. It makes such a difference to the patients, they absolutely love it.”
