Charitable Trust supports the Games

The 31st Westfield Health British Transplant Games has been given a boost following a £25,000 grant.

Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust has chosen to support the Games, which are organised on behalf of the charity Transplant Sport UK (TSUK) to promote the benefits of organ donation.

The Games is one of the biggest annual multi-sports events in the UK and will take place at venues across Sheffield from 7th until 11th August.

The aim of the event is to encourage transplant patients to regain fitness, to demonstrate the benefits of organ transplantation and to promote awareness of the need for more people to sign on to the NHS Organ Donor Register. Most importantly, we hope that seeing these fit and healthy competitors will encourage people to talk about organ donation to their friends and relatives and discussing their wishes, should the opportunity to donate arise in their family.

Currently in the UK, there are more than 8,000 people waiting for a transplant, but there are less than 3,000 transplants each year due to a shortage of donors.

Emma Dickens, Head of Fundraising at Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust, said: “The Games is a fantastic competition and plays a key role in highlighting the importance of organ donation.

“Organ donation can save lives and it is vital that we are all aware of the difficulties finding suitable donors and the current shortage of donors.  I hope the Games will encourage more people to sign up to the NHS Organ Donor Register."

Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust is one of more than 400 registered charities in the UK associated with NHS Trusts. Their aim is not to fund patient care, but to enhance and improve it – providing grants to projects that are over and above those served by government funding. As a local charity with such a wide remit, Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust could, at some point, have a major impact on the life of anyone living in Sheffield, or in many cases, South Yorkshire and beyond.

Elizabeth Jones, chair of Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust, added: “We are delighted that the Games is coming to Sheffield and are pleased to be supporting the event with our donation.”
