New Monopoly Sheffield Edition Features Sheffield Hopsitals Charitable Trust

Friday 21st September 2007

Pass GO, collect the city's crown jewels for just paper money, and try to land on the healthcare utility – Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust. The new official Monopoly Sheffield edition was launched on 21st September 2007.

The official launch came on the same morning it hits shop shelves AND on the same day that the newly revealed 'Mayfair' on the board celebrates its 75th birthday. Sheffield City Hall has seen off other Sheffield landmarks to land the leading slot, following a public poll. The concert hall now sits atop the board, on the exclusive ‘Mayfair’ square - priced at £400. The second most valuable spot on the board is occupied by Meadowhall Shopping Centre. Other Sheffield favourites to replace the traditional Monopoly London streets, include:

* Sheffield City Hall - which replaces 'Mayfair' on a dark blue square, price £400.

* Meadowhall - which occupies ‘Park Lane’, also on a dark blue square at a price of £350.

Bramall Lane - finally in the pink after a turbulent year, occupying 'Northumberland Avenue' (£160).

Hillsborough - 'rivals' Sheffield Wednesday - replacing 'Whitehall' (pink, £140).

* The Winter Garden - which replaces 'Pentonville Road' on a light blue square, price £120.

* The Crucible Theatre - taking up residence on 'Coventry Street' (yellow ; £260).

* The Supertram - arriving at 10am precisely at 'Fenchurch train station' (£200).

And of course…

* Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust – replacing the Electric Company.

The game is OFFICIAL - it's identical in spirit and shape to the traditional one, bar the streets. It is fully legally sanctioned by Monopoly owners Hasbro. The property colours and positions, money, counters and rules are the same as the original - only the street names change. The game's creator Mark Marriott says:

"The game is a celebration of the city and we believe it is going to be the Christmas No 1, the city's retailers are going mad for it. Advance orders have been huge.We reckon the only games left on shop shelves by Christmas will be the ones on Santa's sleigh.”

Emma Dickens, Head of Fundraising for Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust, says:

"Everyone at the charity is delighted to take a place on the new Monopoly Sheffield board. We are proud to represent the charity sector in the city, particularly as we are the beneficiary charity of the 75th anniversary celebrations of Sheffield's new ‘Mayfair’ - the City Hall."

“We are the local charity that benefits all the NHS organisations in Sheffield - making us an important part of the local community – so being on the board is a real boost to our fundraising efforts. It raises our profile and we are delighted to be one of only 33 city organisations to have Passed GO."

WH Smiths, Woolworths, Tesco, Debenhams,Toys R Us and most of the city's key games and books retailers will be selling it. The game can also be bought online at:   www.winningmoves.co.uk
