Pain in the Arch for Charity
Wednesday 18th June 2008
A Sheffield charity is set to benefit from sales of a new beer, being launched this summer by Abbeydale Brewery – local brewers and owners of the Rising Sun pub in Fulwood.
The beer, entitled “Pain in the Arch”, has been created in honour of Rising Sun regular, Roger Crookenden Johnson. Roger requested that money from the sale of the beers go to Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust, to benefit cancer patients at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, having himself been treated at the hospital for both pancreatic and throat cancer.
Roger was one of the first customers when Abbeydale Brewery took over The Rising Sun in December 2005 and has been one of the pub’s most loyal supporters.

Director of Abbeydale Brewery, Sue Morton, said: “Roger knows his beers and knows what he likes, and is always ready to share his opinion. His tastes tend to run to darker and less hoppy beers than most of the Abbeydale beers and so with the exception of Black Mass and a few of our seasonal beers, Roger mainly drinks the guest beers and often influences the beer we buy by making recommendations of good beers he has tried elsewhere. So in brewing Roger's Pain in the Arch the brewers have a challenge to brew a beer to Roger’s exacting tastes!”
The Rising Sun beer festival, where “Pain in the Arch” will be officially launched, will also be used to raise funds for the Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust. This popular local festival will run from 10th to 13th July, and will feature more than 60 different beers from around the UK, including 12 beers from Sheffield-based brewery, Abbeydale Brewery. Last year this event raised more than £700 for charity.
As well as being on sale at the Rising Sun, “Pain in the Arch” will also be available at a large number of other pubs across the city, and as far afield as North Yorkshire.
Head of Fundraising for Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust, Emma Dickens, said: “We are delighted that Roger and all at Abbeydale Brewery decided to support the work being done at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and use “Pain in the Arch, and the Rising Sun beer festival, to raise valuable funds. I’m looking forward to sampling a pint of Roger’s very special beer!”
Founded in 1996 and sited in an industrial unit just off Abbeydale Road, Abbeydale Brewery has grown steadily and is now producing over 80 barrels a week with plans to expand even further.
