Cycle Challenge For Cystic Fibrosis

Monday 16th July 2007

A local Cystic Fibrosis patient has embarked on an 80-mile bike ride from Dinnington to Skegness, in a bid to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Unit at teh Northern General Hospital. And this went so well that she then cycled the 80-miles back again!

Katie Plummer was joined on for the challenge by seven of her family friends, all of them male. She siad: "It took me about 5 and a half hours on the way out, but coming back was tougher so it took about 6 and a half hours. We cycled in pairs and it was my Dad and i who were the last to finish - I'm still really pleased with our efforts though."

Once all the sponsorship money is counted, Katie and her team hope to have raised in ex cess of £600 for the unit, which treats Cystic Fibrosis patients from across South Yorkshire.

Head of Fundraising for Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust, the charity for the Northern General Hospital, said: "We are hugely grateful to Katie for embarking on this challenge and raising such a great amount for the Cystic Fibrosis Unit."

Cystic Fibrosis is the UK's most common life-threatening inherited disease affecting over 8,000 people in the UK. It affects the lungs and digestive system by clogging them with thick mucus, creating problems with breathing and digesting food.

Eack week, five babies are born with Cystic Fibrosis and each week, three people lose their fight against it.
