Stars and Stripes

Friday 13th February 2009

The Intensive Care Unit at the Northern General Hospital will benefit from events in Sheffield and Rotherham, thanks to Michelle Hanney, who has been fundraising for Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust.

Michelle Hanney, 36 from Greasbrough in Rotherham, wanted to thank the doctors and nursing staff for their excellent care and support when her brother Martin was admitted to the unit last year. Martin was an inpatient for two and a half weeks in July and owing to a number of complications, he unfortunately passed away, aged just 38.

Since the death of her brother, Michelle, her brothers Stephen and Paul, and friends Sharon and Chalky, have been committed to raising money to help other intensive care patients. They have organised a Stars in Their Eyes night on Friday 6th March at the Royal Victoria Hotel in Sheffield, where guests can sing their hearts out in the style of past and current stars, and enjoy a hearty dinner of pie and peas. They have also organised a sponsored walk on Saturday 18th July around parts of Rotherham, for which there is a stipulated dress code of red and white stripes, in honour of Martin’s football team, Sheffield United.

Michelle is becoming an old hand at fundraising. She first organised a Barbeque and Karaoke night on August Bank Holiday 2008, which raised a total of £1,010, followed in November by a Halloween party hosted at Michelle’s house, and Karaoke at her local pub the following evening. A total of £756 was raised from both events for the charity.
