Local Girl Raises Money for Spinal Injuries Unit

Thursday 11th December 2008

Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust has received over £5,000 from one local fundraiser, for the Spinal Injuries Unit at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.

After Rachel Donger (25) from Newark in Nottinghamshire broke her back in August 2007 and damaged her spinal cord, she decided she wanted to give something back to the unit where she was so well looked after.

The first charity event was a clay pigeon shoot, which her father organised near to his home in Northampton. The event was a great success and a total of £3,000 was raised. The proceeds were split between the Spinal Injuries Unit and the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance.

Rachel and her friend Kay Saunders then organised a charity ball in August 2008, which offered ticket holders a three course meal, auction and disco. Over £1,800 was raised, with most tickets selling before the story even went to press!

Her role as events coordinator for Skirmish Paintball Games inspired Rachel to organise her next event, a paintball tournament at Sherwood Forest. Teams from Skirmish sites all over the UK came along on the day to support the cause and just under £2,000 was raised and donated to the Spinal Injuries Unit.

If you are inspired by Rachel’s story and would like to get involved in fundraising for Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust, please call Isla Denoon on 0114 226 3415 or e-mail isla.denoon@shct.nhs.uk
