Putting his Heart into Fundraising

Monday 11th May 2009

Arnold (Arnie) Needham, (65) a retired Social Services worker from Mexborough, believes he owes his life to the expertise and care of surgeons and staff at the Chesterman 4 Unit,  Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.

Arnie said   ‘The staff on Chesterman 4 were fantastic.  I could never work out which shift Alison Sidebottom, the Staff Nurse was on.  Whenever I woke up or needed her, she was there. The surgeons and staff were brilliant and I wanted to do something for them’.

Following Arnie’s recovery from chronic heart disease and two operations for surgery (by-pass and cardio-infusion), Arnie and his fellow members at the LNER Club in Swinton held a charity night to raise funds for Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust's Chesterman 4 fund.  The charity night was mainly organised by Sandra Rogers, with the help of Arnie and his family and friends at the club, and raised £900.

Staff Nurse Alison Sidebottom received the cheque from Arnie and Sandra, she said: "Arnie was a lovely patient. We are so pleased to receive a cheque for such a fantastic amount of money from a small club like this - it is amazing and we will make good use of it."

Carol Denton, Fundraiser from Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust said: " When so many people are tightening their belts during a recession, it is wonderful to know that local communities are so generous. We need to raise over £2.5m every year. This money does not replace government funding, but helps us to improve the healing environment for the benefit of patients and staff in our hospitals. We would like to say a big thank you to Arnie and everyone at the LNER Club who worked so hard to raise this amount."
