Local Man Raising Money for Special Care Babies

Tuesday 9th December 2008

The Special Care Baby Unit at the Jessop Wing has received multiple donations over the years, thanks to one local man’s fantastic commitment to fundraising. Barry Bull from Sheffield, devotes his spare time to organising a variety of charity events. Thanks to his efforts, Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust has collected just under £3,000 for special care and premature babies.

Barry was originally born in Wales, but his whole family moved to Sheffield when he was a young boy, after his father took work with a local mining company. Barry’s mother contracted bronchitis during his birth, which unfortunately developed into COPD, requiring treatment at the Jessops Hospital for Women. In 2001 a new maternity hospital was built and renamed the Jessop Wing.

Barry’s ties to the hospital’s legacy remain strong, as has his commitment to raising money for the Special Care Baby Unit.

To date, Barry has organised several fundraising events, including an annual tandem skydive at Hibaldstow airfield in Lincolnshire. This event takes place every summer and gives people the chance to experience all the thrill and adrenaline of a skydive, at the same time as raising money for an extremely worthy cause.  Previous events have included a fancy dress barrel push around Sheffield city centre, which saw teams from two local pubs team up with members of the public to push the barrels from the bottom of the Moor all the way up to the Cathedral - and back again.

Barry’s commitment to raising money for the unit is unwavering. When asked where his motivation comes from, Barry said: “A lot of people are alive today because of the wonderful staff working on the Special Care Baby Unit. The work that these people do every day is vital and it is my absolute pleasure to help them by raising money to support their work.”
