Couple's Charity Swim with Olympic Medalists
Wednesday 9th September 2009
Sharrow resident Paul Mann will be taking to the water alongside an array of Olympic medalists on 13th September as he competes in the Great North Swim. Paul (29) and his fiancée Rebecca Sharman (31), will join thousands of swimmers, both amateur and professional alike, to complete one mile of open water swimming in England’s largest lake, Windermere, in the Lake District National Park.
Unlike some of his fellow participants, Paul does not have medals in mind. Instead he will be swimming to raise money for the Palliative Care Unit at the Northern General Hospital.
Paul is hoping to raise £1,000 in sponsorship for the unit which is close to Paul’s heart, as staff at the Palliative Care Unit looked after Paul’s father in the last few weeks of his life in April this year.
Both Paul and Rebecca are regular swimmers, although Windermere’s chilly open waters will be a bit of shock compared to the indoor swimming pool they are used to.
Carol Denton, Fundraiser at Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust, said: “Paul and Rebecca are very brave to take part in this event. Swimming in open water, which is extremely cold, is quite a challenge. The fact that they chose such a worthwhile cause as the Palliative Care Unit to benefit from their efforts is brilliant and we all wish them well.”
