Tim Surr Surges into action to raise diabetes awareness
June 2010

Tim Surr was diagnosed with diabetes in 2008, after suffering with severe pain in his toe. This came as a shock to the 51-yeal old, self confessed football fanatic, as diabetes did not run in his family and apart from the pain in his toe he had no other symptoms. Following the diagnosis Tim was told that he would lose his toe and possibly his foot. Unfortunately, however, Tim lost his entire leg beneath the knee.
Nonetheless, Tim did not let the devastating effects of diabetes adversely impact on his life. In fact, somewhere between the surgical procedure and the rehabilitation process Tim picked up a bug: the fundraising bug!
In March this year, Tim (combining his passion for football and the desire to spread the word about diabetes) organised a charity football match raising a phenomenal £430.00 for the Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust. Tim’s efforts, however, did not stop there. Tim persuaded his employer (British Oxygen Company- based in Rotherham) to match, pound-for-pound, what he had raised at the football match. Thanks to the generosity of his employer, Tim was able to donate a total sum of £860.00 to both the Sheffield Vascular Institute and the Specialised Rehabilitation Centre-both funds of Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust. The Units were delighted to received the proceeds, which will help enhance the environment in which patient's receive their treatment.
Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust would like to thank Tim for his hard work- it is a true testimony to the strength of his character. Tim is pictured (centre-right) at a cheque presentation at Northern General Hospital on 6 May 2010.
