Pub Goers go the distance for charity

Friday 1st June 2007

Regulars from a pub in Burncross are swapping their bar stools for walking boots on 30th June, as they embark on the 11th annual ‘Acorn Amble’, a 28 mile trek from Derbyshire to Sheffield to raise money for local charities.

115 people are set to take part in the walk, from Castleton back to the Acorn Inn in Burncross.

Over the past eleven years, more than £45,000 has been raised for charity. Jonathan Jones is one of the half a dozen organisers of the walk. He said:

“We just enjoy doing something positive for local charities and choose a different one each year. This year we’ve picked two really good causes and the donations will be split equally between them.”

Last year, St Luke’s Hospice received over £10,000 as a result of the team’s fundraising efforts. This year, half of the money will go to Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust, which plans to invest the money into the Special Baby Care Unit at the Jessops Hospital. The other half will go to Neurocare, a local charity which supports the work of the Neurological Unit at Sheffield Hallamshire Hospital.

Emma Dickens, Head of Fundraising at Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust said:

“The Acorn Amblers are a fantastic group who are committed to raising money for local charities. The Special Care Baby Unit will really benefit from their efforts and we can’t thank them enough.”

The weary walkers will get back to the Acorn Inn early in the evening for a well-earned drink, before a raffle is held to raise even more money. Local businesses are supporting the team’s efforts by donating prizes, including a football signed by Sheffield Wednesday players, donated by the club.

If you would like to support the walkers, or donate a prize to the raffle, drop into the Acorn Inn on Burncross Road, Burncross or give them a call on 0114 245 5009.
