Dedicated Friends Raise Funds for Teenage Cancer Unit

Thursday 18th December 2008

Friends and family of a local Doncaster man have raised an impressive £4,341 for the new teenage cancer unit within the haematology wards at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, by hosting a charity cricket event.

The event was organised by Rob Johnson - a friend of Neil Gardiner who sadly passed away from leukaemia last November. Rob, who works at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, said: “The event was a huge success and it’s been great to be able to give something back to the ward where Neil was treated.”

The day long event saw Neil’s old RAF colleagues battle it out with 5 other teams, four of which were made of Neil’s family and friends and the other one from Sprotbrough Cricket Club. Neil’s friends supplied food to spectator’s and collected donations for the unit.

The cricket event was part of a series of events which have taken place to raise funds in memory of Neil. Scott Wilson, who played football alongside Neil in the Sprotbrough Crusaders, raised £243 by organising a football tournament to mark the first anniversary of Neil’s death. Earlier in the year friends Dan Fisher and Matt Butler raised £532 by running in the Clumber Park 10k race.

Isla Denoon, fundraiser for the Sheffield Leukaemia and Blood Disorders Appeal said: “We are extremely grateful to all of Neil’s friends and family who have raised money for the teenage unit, the funds raised will go towards improving facilities in which to support and care for 16 to 25 year olds who have been diagnosed with leukaemia and other blood disorders.”

The new unit is quite different to the typical hospital environment and was built with young people very much in mind. Patients have access to computers with internet access, DVD players and PlayStations, and were involved in the planning and design to ensure that their needs were fully met. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, to help reassure patients and improve their stay in hospital.

Hearse'ing Around!

Tuesday 26th August 2008

In April an intrepid team of four fundraisers took part in the challenging Coyote Rally. This annual event begins in Calais and this year saw 98 teams travel through Paris, Munich and Prague, before reaching their final destination of Amsterdam.

Driving in the Rally to raise money for the Sheffield Leukaemia and Blood Disorders Appeal, the team’s vehicle of choice was a somewhat outrageous pink hearse.

The team was lead by Reverend Anthony Fry from Upperthorpe and so decided to call themselves the ‘Rev'd-up Raiders’. They had an eventful journey to say the least. Notable events included losing their hearse in Prague for 5 ½ hours and taking a wrong turn and nearly ending up in Hungary.

The Rev’d-up Raiders finally reached the finishing line four days later in Amsterdam. However, the team persevered and although the Rev’d-up Raiders did not come first in the Rally, they still managed to raise an impressive amount of money for the Appeal and certainly managed to turn a few heads in the process.

The team are now selling off their pink hearse with proceeds from the sale also being donated to the Sheffield Leukaemia and Blood Disorders Appeal.

Life in a Day for Leukaemia

Tuesday 8th July 2008

The Blue Bell Inn at North Wingfield held a family fun day in July, to raise money for the Sheffield Leukaemia and Blood Disorders Appeal, after the daughter of one of the event organisers received unique treatment for leukaemia at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

The area surrounding the pub was filled with a stage and sound system, fairground rides and stalls, bouncy castle, side shows, trampoline, and even a demonstration by the local fire brigade, plus much much more.

Event Organiser Margaret Hobson, said: “The event gets bigger and better every year and this year was no exception. The crowds turned out despite the bad weather and really threw themselves into the spirit of the day, by digging deep to help support the event and the appeal.

“I’m delighted that the proceeds from the event have gone to the Sheffield Leukaemia and Blood Disorders Appeal and am happy to report that we raised over £2,500. My daughter Stacey was the first adult in Sheffield to receive a cord blood transplant for leukaemia at the unit benefiting from this appeal and is now on the road to recovery. Without the amazing staff in the haematology department she simply wouldn’t be here today. She really enjoyed attending the fun day and loved watching the live bands that appeared on stage.”

A cord blood transplant uses the cells from a newborn baby’s umbilical cord to treat blood cancers, in the same way that a traditional bone marrow transplant uses bone marrow cells from a donor. The benefit is that it is far easier to find a donor match using cord blood cells. The downside is that this is still a very rare procedure. Stacey Hobson was the 27th person in the world to receive this kind of treatment.

Appeal Boosted by Wild Boar Cyclists

Monday 7th July 2008

To show his appreciation for the care and treatment given to his father by the haematology department at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, keen cyclist Chris Morton recently undertook a major fundraising challenge.

Photo

He, plus three team mates, took part in “Wild Board 24” – a 24 hour mountain bike race, in the challenging terrain of Grizedale Forest in Cumbria. In doing so the team raised a fantastic £2000 for the Sheffield Leukaemia and Blood Disorders Appeal.

The team raced from 2pm on Saturday 17th May, until 2pm on Sunday 18th May, in dry and dusty conditions. Despite the course containing long climbs and short fast technical descents, Chris and the team thoroughly enjoyed the event.

Chris said: “It is the first time any of us have taken part in an event of this nature, but we rose to the challenge, spurred on by the knowledge that we were raising money for such a fantastic department.

“My father owes his life to the team at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, so doing something to raise money for the Sheffield Leukaemia and Blood Disorders Appeal seems like the least I could do.”

Chris’ team raised the money through getting sponsorship form friends, family and colleagues, but also got corporate support from companies including Mytum and Selby Waste Recycling, Cromwell Plastics Recycling, Biffa Waste Services, Arco-Sheffield and Ardagh Glass.

Westfield donates £50k to hospital appeal

Monday 14th April 2008

Westfield Health has given the Sheffield Leukaemia and Blood Disorders Appeal a £50,000 boost.

The first fundraising appeal to be launched by Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust (SHCT) is aiming to raise money to fully equip the newly refurbished haematology ward and day room within the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield.

The unit looks after leukaemia, myeloma, haemophilia and bone marrow transplant patients from across South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire.

Funds raised by the appeal will be used to equip the proposed new wards, provide isolation rooms for bone marrow transplant patients, install patient entertainment systems and create a teenage cancer centre.

Westfield’s donation will go towards sponsoring an isolation room and purchasing new equipment for the ward and day unit, including important patient monitoring equipment, ECG machines and specialist chairs.

Emma Dickens, head of fundraising at SHCT, said: “We are very grateful for the support we have had from Westfield, which brings us incredibly close to the final target of the first phase of the fundraising appeal.

“Patients can stay in isolation rooms for months at a time, so it is vital that they are provided with a clean and comfortable environment with the most up-to-date equipment.

“The donation from Westfield will effectively sponsor one of the new isolation rooms, and enable a whole range of vital equipment to be purchased, which will make a huge difference to children with blood disorders across the region.”

Graham Moore, Chairman of Westfield Health, said: “This is a fantastic appeal that is going to make a huge difference to the lives of many people. We are delighted to be involved with the appeal and I am looking forward to seeing the new facilities when they are finished.
