Tim Surr Surges into action to raise diabetes awareness

June 2010

Photo

Tim Surr was diagnosed with diabetes in 2008, after suffering with severe pain in his toe. This came as a shock to the 51-yeal old, self confessed football fanatic, as diabetes did not run in his family and apart from the pain in his toe he had no other symptoms. Following the diagnosis Tim was told that he would lose his toe and possibly his foot. Unfortunately, however, Tim lost his entire leg beneath the knee.

A Celebration of the Orchestra's most difficult instrument

Wednesday 16th June 2010

Photo

A rather unusual concert was held recently at St Marks Church, Broomhill, to raise money for the Sheffield Cystic Fibrosis Appeal. Thirty players of the French Horn, generally believed to be the most difficult instrument in an orchestra, gathered together for an event that raised the church roof.

Horn players from local orchestras and some from further afield, came together for a day of music-making, culminating in a rousing concert that displayed the instrument’s versatility, and the talents of the musicians. The musical director on for the event was Anthony Halstead, who is a past principal hornist of the London Symphony Orchestra and now a renowned soloist and conductor. He conducted the group of horns in works by Beethoven, Bruckner and Humperdink. The concert concluded with a moving rendition of themes from The Titanic by James Horner.

Dr Frank Edenborough, amateur horn player, and lead consultant at Sheffield's Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre, organised the event to both support the fundraising appeal and indulge in his favourite past time. Frank said: “I was delighted at how this event came together, and for the support of so many of my fellow horn players. The event was a great success both in terms of the standard of the music, but also because it raised more than £1,000 for our new Cystic Fibrosis Unit.”

Arctic Monkeys back Sheffield Cystic Fibrosis Appeal

22nd March 2010

Sheffield superstars the Arctic Monkeys made a special trip home this week to throw their support behind the recently launched £1m Sheffield Cystic Fibrosis Appeal.

The High Green heroes took time out from their current world tour to call at the Northern General Hospital on Thursday (11 March), visiting some of the young Cystic Fibrosis patients being treated there and making a very special donation to the appeal.

Bass player Nick O’Malley and drummer Matt Helders presented Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust with a bass guitar used at their recent gigs in the United States, Europe and their homecoming Sheffield Arena concert in November. Signed by Nick, the guitar will be auctioned to raise much-needed funds for the £1 million appeal to bring a new 12-bed World-class Cystic Fibrosis facility to the Northern General Hospital.

Fantastic boost for Cystic Fibrosis Appeal

25th February 2010

By Sarah Dunn, Health Reporter, Sheffield Star

A CAMPAIGN launched to raise £1 million towards a new state-of-the-art Cystic Fibrosis unit has got off to a fantastic start - with a £300,000 donation from a national charity! The Cystic Fibrosis Trust has made the whopping donation to the campaign being run by The Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust, with the backing of The Star.

Half the money was raised through the Sparkle Children's Charity's annual ball - which raises money to support sick and disadvantaged kids - with the remaining from the charity's fundraising income.

The campaign is working to bring a 'world class' 12-bed inpatient unit to the Northern General Hospital, where young patients currently spend long stretches on a respiratory ward with elderly patients.

Rosie Barnes, chief executive of the charity, said: “We recognised that the otherwise excellent CF service was compromised by lack of appropriate in-patient facilities, and that a new dedicated unit was needed.

“We are delighted to be supporting this initiative which will greatly improve the quality of in-patient care and make hospital stays more comfortable.”

The Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is putting in £1.4 million, with the remaining cash needed to make it exceptional to be raised through the appeal.

MAKE us a million! That's the challenge Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust and The Star are setting you in a vital fundraising campaign.

The £1 million Cystic Fibrosis Appeal is raising money to bring a 'world class' unit for patients to the city's Northern General Hospital.

The specialist team currently has just two dedicated treatment rooms, meaning young adults with the condition are spending long stretches on general respiratory wards which they share with elderly patients.

The Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is putting £1.4 million into the new 12-bed inpatient facility, with the remaining cash needed to make it exceptional to be raised through the charity appeal.

3 Peaks Challenge for Charity

Monday 30th November 2009

Photo

When John Ready and four of his friends, all from the Chesterfield area, decided to do the Yorkshire 3 Peak Challenge for charity, they found it a tough and very muddy challenge.

John said: “We all made it, but it was much harder than we thought it would be. The weather was fantastic, although I didn’t look ahead too much at the wonderful views as all I could see was the next big hill to climb. In the end the total we raised made the blisters worthwhile.”  › read more

The 12 ladies, who named themselves the ‘Disparate Housewives’, first set about fundraising for the unit by producing a 2010 calendar. Charity Concert - Gavin Somerset and Deepcar Brass Band

Tuesday 27th October 2009

Gavin Somerset is the Conductor of Deepcar Brass Band and suffers from Cystic Fibrosis, one of the UK's most common life-threatening inherited disease affecting some 8,000 children, teenagers and young adults. Gavin, along with many of his musical friends are holding a charity concert at The Venue, Stocksbridge, on Sunday 1st November.

Gavin (25) has been playing drums since his Grandparents bought him a set aged 2 in place of an Easter egg, as it was thought Gavin was lactose intolerant before he was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis.  By the age of 5, he had seen a real brass band and decided that he wanted a proper drum kit and lessons and joined his first band, Chapeltown British Legion at the age of 6. Since then, Gavin has played with many bands in the South Yorkshire area.      read more

The Cystic Fibrosis Team hosted a Ladies Pamper Evening in September to raise funds for the Sheffield Cystic Fibrosis Appeal.

The event, which took place in the Physiotherapy Suite in Brearley Ward (A Floor) at the Northern General Hospital, gave ladies the opportunity to enjoy a bit of ‘me’ time, being pampered and preened to perfection, whilst enjoying a buffet, drinks and a chocolate fountain. Treatments included back and neck massages, Indian head massages, prescriptive facials, manicures, pedicures, face masks and foot scrubs.

The event was a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by all of the ladies who attended. Particular thanks go to Physiotherapist Katy Smith, for her help in setting up the event and helping to manage things on the night. In total, £780 was raised for the Sheffield Cystic Fibrosis Appeal.

Cat & Fiddle Challenge

Thursday 22nd October 2009

Photo

Fundraiser Stuart Webster, along with sons Joseph and Stanley, took part in the Cat and Fiddle Challenge in October. This 88km bike ride from Stoke to Macclesfield, involved a 7 mile climb up the Cat and Fiddle road to Buxton, Axe Edge and then back to Stoke.

The team of three completed the challenge in just under 4 ½ hours cycling time, with an hour for stops. It was a dry but cold start for the team, which turned to rain on the accent of the Cat and Fiddle. After a break they endured a cold and wet decent to the outskirts of Buxton and were quite glad of the uphill of Axe Edge. The team returned to normal temperature with the climb over Axe Edge, before enjoying the sun for the last 20 miles or so.   › read more
