General grants
Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust holds over 400 designated funds relating to individual hospitals, wards and medical specialities across Sheffield. Any NHS staff member may apply to use these funds.
For each designated fund, SHCT appoints fund advisors - usually medical and administrative staff working on the relevant ward or department. SHCT delegates authority to these fund advisors to approve charitable expenditure of up to £5,000, within certain general guidance.
For amounts over £5,000, NHS staff must submit an application to SHCT. Grants between £5,000 and £25,000 can be approved by the chair of SHCT. Such applications can generally be processed in two to three weeks. Applications for sums of over £25,000 are considered by the full board of trustees of SHCT, which meets four times a year. All larger grants also need the written support of the host NHS organisation.
This system helps to ensure that funds can be spent quickly, but that the largest grants are carefully scrutinised.
Guidance for NHS staff
If there is a project or improvement for which you hope to access charitable funds, please contact the relevant fund advisor in the first instance. If you are unsure which funds might be relevant, or who is the appropriate fund advisor, please contact us.
Application forms for grants for any amount over £5,000 can be downloaded below, or from your NHS Trust intranet. These need to be completed, signed by the relevant fund advisors and forwarded to SHCT with any supporting documentation.
