22nd March 2010

Photo

Sheffield superstars the Arctic Monkeys made a special trip home this week to throw their support behind the recently launched £1m Sheffield Cystic Fibrosis Appeal.

The High Green heroes took time out from their current world tour to call at the Northern General Hospital on Thursday (11 March), visiting some of the young Cystic Fibrosis patients being treated there and making a very special donation to the appeal.

Bass player Nick O’Malley and drummer Matt Helders presented Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust with a bass guitar used at their recent gigs in the United States, Europe and their homecoming Sheffield Arena concert in November. Signed by Nick, the guitar will be auctioned to raise much-needed funds for the £1 million appeal to bring a new 12-bed World-class Cystic Fibrosis facility to the Northern General Hospital.

Fantastic boost for Cystic Fibrosis Appeal

25th February 2010

By Sarah Dunn, Health Reporter, Sheffield Star

A CAMPAIGN launched to raise £1 million towards a new state-of-the-art Cystic Fibrosis unit has got off to a fantastic start - with a £300,000 donation from a national charity! The Cystic Fibrosis Trust has made the whopping donation to the campaign being run by The Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust, with the backing of The Star.

Half the money was raised through the Sparkle Children's Charity's annual ball - which raises money to support sick and disadvantaged kids - with the remaining from the charity's fundraising income.

The campaign is working to bring a 'world class' 12-bed inpatient unit to the Northern General Hospital, where young patients currently spend long stretches on a respiratory ward with elderly patients.

Rosie Barnes, chief executive of the charity, said: “We recognised that the otherwise excellent CF service was compromised by lack of appropriate in-patient facilities, and that a new dedicated unit was needed.

“We are delighted to be supporting this initiative which will greatly improve the quality of in-patient care and make hospital stays more comfortable.”

The Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is putting in £1.4 million, with the remaining cash needed to make it exceptional to be raised through the appeal.

MAKE us a million! That's the challenge Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust and The Star are setting you in a vital fundraising campaign.

The £1 million Cystic Fibrosis Appeal is raising money to bring a 'world class' unit for patients to the city's Northern General Hospital.

The specialist team currently has just two dedicated treatment rooms, meaning young adults with the condition are spending long stretches on general respiratory wards which they share with elderly patients.

The Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is putting £1.4 million into the new 12-bed inpatient facility, with the remaining cash needed to make it exceptional to be raised through the charity appeal.

Shooting Club on Target for Cystic Fibrosis Appeal

Wednesday 27th January 2010

Photo

Members of Staveley Rifle and Pistol Club were bang on target recently, when they competed against each other, in order to raise much-needed funds for the Sheffield Cystic Fibrosis Appeal. Members competed in the new ‘Charity Shield’ tournament and held a raffle, successfully raising £300 for the Appeal.

Member Mike Lee explains: “The ‘Charity Shield’ tournament was created specifically for charitable purposes. The challenge involves 10 shots over 25 yards, followed by 20 shots from 50 metres. This is the first year we have run the ‘Charity Shield’ and I’m proud to say we did it for such a great cause.

“Our members were given the opportunity to nominate a charity to support, before we all took a vote on which one to go with. I choose to nominate the Sheffield Cystic Fibrosis Appeal. My daughter Alison works on the Cystic Fibrosis unit at the Northern General Hospital, so I know first hand how much the new facility is needed. The staff on the unit do a brilliant job at looking after their patients and therefore deserve our support in continuing to build on this and improve things.”

Fundraiser Isla Denoon said: “We are grateful to Staveley Rifle and Pistol Club for all their efforts in raising this money, with particular thanks to Mike Lee for nominating our Appeal as their chosen charity. With the clubs help we continue to move one step further to achieving our target of £1million and our quest to improve facilities and care for teenagers and young adults with Cystic Fibrosis.”

If you are interested in making a donation or finding out more about the Sheffield Cystic Fibrosis Appeal, please contact Fundraiser Carol Denton at carol.denton@shct.nhs.uk or on 0114 226 3517.

Charity Winter Concert for Cystic Fibrosis

Tuesday 12th January 2010

The Endcliffe Orchestra will be performing an exciting selection of film music at their forthcoming Charity Winter Concert on Saturday 16th January. The event will take place at St Luke’s Church in Lodge Moor from 7.30pm and everyone is welcome.

All profits from the event will go to benefit the Sheffield Cystic Fibrosis Appeal, which aims to raise £1million to build and fully equip a new adult Cystic Fibrosis unit at the Northern General Hospital.

The Orchestra, led by Ralph Dawson and conducted by Martin Lightowler, will entertain guests with some fantastic music from a range of popular films such as The Great Escape, ET, Gladiator, Titanic and Pirates of the Caribbean. The Orchestra will also showcase Walton’s music from Henry V and Morricone’s Gabriel’s Oboe.

Sara Green will be one of the musicians taking part. She said: “The aim was to stage a really fun and interesting show whilst raising much-needed funds for a very worthy cause. We chose to support Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust by raising funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Appeal, because not only does one of our musicians suffer from Cystic Fibrosis, but one of the consultants from the Cystic Fibrosis Unit occasionally plays French horn with us. So you could say that it really is a cause close to our hearts.”

Tickets for the event are priced at £8 per person, £6 concession, under 16’s free. Tickets are available by contacting Sara on 0114 262 0803.

Fundraiser Isla Denoon, said: “The Winter Concert sounds like a really great event and with songs from a range of popular films, you cannot fail to recognise one of your favourites. We are grateful to Endcliffe Orchestra for supporting the Cystic Fibrosis Appeal and for helping us to move one step closer to achieving our appeal target.”

The event kicked off at the Miners Arms in Dronfield and involved an exciting treasure hunt with various tasks and challenges taking place along the East Coast, with stops in Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay, Filey and Scarborough, before the event came to a thrilling close at Middlesbrough Stadium.

Just under £500 has been collected so far for the Cystic Fibrosis Appeal, but donations do still continue to come in.

Charity Concert - Gavin Somerset and Deepcar Brass Band

Tuesday 27th October 2009

Gavin Somerset is the Conductor of Deepcar Brass Band and suffers from Cystic Fibrosis, one of the UK's most common life-threatening inherited disease affecting some 8,000 children, teenagers and young adults. Gavin, along with many of his musical friends are holding a charity concert at The Venue, Stocksbridge, on Sunday 1st November.

Gavin (25) has been playing drums since his Grandparents bought him a set aged 2 in place of an Easter egg, as it was thought Gavin was lactose intolerant before he was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis.  By the age of 5, he had seen a real brass band and decided that he wanted a proper drum kit and lessons and joined his first band, Chapeltown British Legion at the age of 6. Since then, Gavin has played with many bands in the South Yorkshire area.

As a talented and accomplished musician, composer and arranger of all musical styles, Gavin has begun to realise some of his ambitions. As well as his playing he has become an accomplished conductor and arranger for brass bands and individuals, running his own small publishing company. He has also been teaching percussion in Derbyshire schools since 2005 and his pupils have a 100% pass rate in national exams. Gavin’s next ambition is to write for the film and recording industry.

Throughout Gavin’s life he has kept his condition low-profile and Cystic Fibrosis has never interrupted his playing. On one occasion he removed his IV line in order to play in a regional contest, having the line re-sited at the hospital after he played! His motto is that he controls his Cystic Fibrosis not the other way around - unless it’s absolutely necessary.

The concert is Gavin's way of helping those at the Northern General who have helped him lead a full and active life. Proceeds from the concert are for the Sheffield Cystic Fibrosis Appeal, which aims to raise £1m for a 12-bedded, gold standard, regional unit for Cystic Fibrosis patients. The Unit will transform in-patient treatment for teenagers (16+) and young adults from across South Yorkshire and beyond.

There will be a special introduction to the concert by Dr Frank Edenborough, Consultant at the Cystic Fibrosis Unit, who will also give a solo on French horn, along with three very special guest soloists, Andrew Platts, Derek Renshaw and Kim Wear.

Please come along and help Gavin support this worthy cause. Doors open at 7pm and show starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are only £5 from The Venue box office on 0114 283 8692 or are available on the night. For further information please contact Fundraiser Rosey Somerset on 07736 445 294. For information about the Cystic Fibrosis Appeal and how you can get involved, please contact Isla Denoon on 0114 226 3415 or at isla.denoon@shct.nhs.uk

Ladies Pamper Evening

Monday 26th October 2009

Photo

The Cystic Fibrosis Team hosted a Ladies Pamper Evening in September to raise funds for the Sheffield Cystic Fibrosis Appeal.

The event, which took place in the Physiotherapy Suite in Brearley Ward (A Floor) at the Northern General Hospital, gave ladies the opportunity to enjoy a bit of ‘me’ time, being pampered and preened to perfection, whilst enjoying a buffet, drinks and a chocolate fountain. Treatments included back and neck massages, Indian head massages, prescriptive facials, manicures, pedicures, face masks and foot scrubs.

The event was a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by all of the ladies who attended. Particular thanks go to Physiotherapist Katy Smith, for her help in setting up the event and helping to manage things on the night. In total, £780 was raised for the Sheffield Cystic Fibrosis Appeal.

James Bond - For Your Eyes Only!

Friday 4th September 2009

Photo

James Bond is inviting potential Bond girls, 007 wannabes and anyone who would like to get a little bit fitter, to take part in a charity aerobics class on Monday 7th September, to raise funds for Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust's appeal for a new Cystic Fibrosis Ward at the Northern General Hospital.

James, a personal trainer and aerobics instructor, promises a Bond themed session to get everyone shaken and not stirred! The session will run over lunchtime from 12.10 to 12.50 in the gym at the Spinal Injuries Unit at the Northern General Hospital. James is asking for a suggested donation of £3, payable on the day, to go towards the Sheffield Cystic Fibrosis Appeal.

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is one of the UKs most common life-threatening inherited diseases, affecting some 8,000 children, teenagers and young adults. There is currently no cure for this condition, which primarily affects the lungs and the body’s ability to digest food and absorb nutrients. People with CF struggle with nutrition, growth and maintaining weight, and experience recurrent chest infections which damage the lungs, making breathing difficult, leading to lung failure requiring a lung transplant or resulting in death.

Improvements in treatment by specialists have increased life expectancy from a mere five years in the 1960’s to an average of 35 years today. Hospital treatment is complex and lengthy, and whilst in hospital patients are cut off from family and friends, and may get behind with school, college or work.

The Sheffield Cystic Fibrosis Appeal aims to raise funds to build and fully equip a new adult Cystic Fibrosis ward at the Northern General Hospital. The intention is that the new ward will be ‘gold standard’ for both patient experience and infection control, and become a real ‘home from home’ for teenagers and young adults with CF.

If you would like to join James Bond at the fundraising themed aerobics session or want further information please call Carol Denton 0114 226 3517.

Christmas Card Competition

Wednesday 29th July 2009

The charity is pleased to offer local artists the opportunity to see their name in lights, or should I say, their design in print! As we find ourselves in the throws of summer, Christmas may seem a long time away. However, whether we like it or not, it is fast-approaching! With this in mind, thoughts turn to our annual Christmas card, which this year will raise funds for the Sheffield Cystic Fibrosis Appeal.

We are looking for local artists to design a Christmas card of their choice and enter it into our competition. This year we are hoping to produce a range of cards so welcome entries in a range of categories (eg cute, religious, contemporary, photographic, humour, winter scenes etc). The cards will be on sale throughout Sheffield, making this a fantastic opportunity for local artists to exhibit their work to a large audience, whilst helping a valuable local cause. Closing date for entries is 11th September, with winning artists being notified no later than 18th September.

To enter, please send your design, along with your name, address, e-mail and telephone number, with the title of your piece, to Kerry Blackett, Arts Co-ordinator, Clock Tower, Northern General Hospital, Sheffield, S5 7AU, before 11th September. Alternatively, these can be sent by e-mail to kerry.blackett@sth.nhs.uk marking your e-mail Christmas Card Competition. For more information about the competition please contact Kerry Blackett on 0114 271 4949.

Blundells Support Sheffield Cystic Fibrosis Appeal

Monday 20th July 2009

Photo

Sheffield and north Derbyshire’s leading estate agent has donated thousands of pounds to one of Sheffield Hospital’s Charitable Trust’s major appeals.

Blundells has contributed £5,000 to the Sheffield Cystic Fibrosis Appeal, which aims to raise a total of £1m to further improve facilities for Cystic Fibrosis patients being treated at the Northern General Hospital.

Sarah Thornton, Specialist Dietitian in the Sheffield adult Cystic Fibrosis team, explains: “Whilst the adult Cystic Fibrosis service at the Northern General is recognised as a Centre of Excellence by the national Cystic Fibrosis Trust, it would be further improved if patients could be cared for in a purpose built dedicated unit providing the environment patients with this condition really need.

“The Sheffield Cystic Fibrosis Appeal aims to raise funds to build and fully equip such a centre. Any amount of money can make so much difference to this appeal and £5,000 is an incredible sum to be given. We’re very grateful.”

Ian Appleyard, Director of Blundells, said: “Unfortunately we are well aware of how unpleasant this disease can be, as a few Blundells staff members have family who suffer from Cystic Fibrosis. We are therefore delighted to be able to donate this money to the appeal so that a dedicated unit can be provided for suffers of Cystic Fibrosis. The staff do a brilliant job and we are pleased to be able to help continue to give patients the excellent care they need.”

Paul Dungworth Cup Supports Cystic Fibrosis

Monday 29th June 2009

Two teams from Royal Mail’s HR Services took part in a charity football match to raise money for the Sheffield Cystic Fibrosis Appeal.

The Paul Dungworth Cup was held in memory of Royal Mail employee Paul Dungworth, who worked in HR Services in Chesterfield, and was a Cystic Fibrosis patient who sadly passed away in 2008 aged 31.

This was the second year the match, which was held between a team from Chesterfield’s HR Services and a team from Sheffield’s HR Services, had taken place, with Sheffield looking to overturn last years 3-0 defeat. After a lot of hard work on the pitch, the Sheffield side were triumphant in their attempts and took the trophy home at 7-4 winners.

A great day was had by all those involved, both on the pitch and those supporting, with just over £2000 being raised for the CF Appeal. This takes the total amount raised by Royal Mail HR Services to just over £5,000, which is a fantastic achievement.

Event Organisers Danny Schofield & Stephen West would like to thank everybody involved in organising the event, those who helped out on the day, those who came on the day and everyone else who supported the event by buying raffle tickets. Discussions have already started regarding a repeat event in 2010, so watch this space for more information….

CF Staff on their Marks for Sheffield Half Marathon

Tuesday 5th May 2009

Photo

The staff of the CF (Cystic Fibrosis) Unit at the Northern General Hospital are winners as far as the National Cystic Fibrosis Trust are concerned. They named the Unit as a Centre of Excellence for the care and treatment of patients with this genetic disease.

But the team of staff from the CF Unit, who ran in the Sheffield Half Marathon, have not set their sights on winning awards or medals.

Frank Edenborough is one of the consultants in the CF Unit, He said:

“We have a winning team of professionals, including specialist doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, dieticians and others working at the CF Unit.  Although the team may be winners at work, we did not expect to win the Sheffield Half Marathon. Our goal was just to get around the course without stopping  and to raise as much money as we could for our cause - to  improve treatment facilities for CF patients in Sheffield."

“Cystic Fibrosis is the UK's most common life-threatening inherited disease. Approximately 8,000 people are currently living with the disease, which occurs in about 1 in 2500 of the population. It is caused by a genetic defect that leads to abnormal function of glands in almost every part of the body. CF particularly affects the lungs and breathing, and the body's ability to digest food and absorb nutrients. In the past CF care was a specialty that was run by paediatricians, because patients died before reaching secondary school age. There is no cure, but advances in treatment have significantly increased life expectancy from a mere five years in the 1960s, to an average of 31 years today. Survival into adulthood has become the norm and the need for adult services has increased rapidly. Currently, young adult CF inpatients at the Northern General Hospital have to stay on wards amongst elderly patients. The Sheffield Cystic Fibrosis Appeal aims to raise funds to improve facilities for CF patients.

Nick Perks, Director of Sheffield Hospital Charitable Trust, said:

“The CF Unit is recognised as a centre of excellence for the care of CF patients. Through the Appeal, we aim to raise funds to improve the facilities, so patients can continue to receive first class clinical care in an environment that is designed with their needs and age group in mind.”

If you would like to support the Cystic Fibrosis Appeal or would like to know more please contact Fundraiser Isla Denoon at isla.denoon@shct.nhs.uk or on 0114 226 3415.

We really cannot thank him enough for supporting the appeal and for helping us to raise valuable funds.”
